To measure GEO performance, track how often AI tools cite your brand, how you compare with competitors in those answers and what happens next in branded search, AI referral traffic and conversions. Rankings and sessions still matter. They miss the growing share of searches that end without a click.
The click is shrinking fast. In a Pew Research Center study of 68,879 Google searches, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Ahrefs found AI Overviews now correlate with a 58% lower click-through rate for top-ranking pages.
If you have started optimising for AI search and now need numbers that prove it works, this guide sets out the five metrics to track and how to report them.
Why GEO Needs Different Metrics
Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, structures content so AI tools cite, summarise and recommend it. Our guide to how GEO works covers the mechanics.
Traditional SEO measurement centres on rankings, sessions and click-through rate. In generative search a user asks a question, the AI answers and your brand either appears or it does not. Sessions cannot capture that moment, a shift we explore in GEO vs SEO: what changes when AI answers.
How to Measure GEO Performance: 5 Core Metrics
1. Citation Rate
Citation rate is the percentage of relevant AI answers that name or cite your brand. We suggest a fixed set of at least 30 questions your customers ask, run across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Log every brand and source each answer names.
Manual logging slows down at scale, which is why dedicated trackers such as Profound and Otterly.ai exist. Segment results by topic cluster, since a brand can lead one theme and vanish from the next.
2. Share of Voice in AI Answers
Share of voice compares how often AI answers name you with how often they name competitors. Count every brand mention across your query set and calculate your share of the total. A healthy citation rate means little if a rival appears in most of the answers you miss.
FMCG brands should test product comparisons such as ‘best high-protein snack for work’. D2C brands should test prompts such as ‘best vegan skincare brand in the UK’ and B2B brands should test shortlists such as ‘best PR agency for food brands’. Our piece on why GEO is key for FMCG, B2B and D2C covers the differences.
3. Earned Mentions Across the Web
Ahrefs analysed 75,000 brands and found that branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. Correlation falls short of proof, yet a gap that wide should shape where you invest. In our view, earned coverage in credible publications is the strongest off-site lever in GEO.
Links still carry weight, as our guide to high-quality backlinks for your website explains. Track monthly brand mentions in credible publications alongside referring domain quality.
4. Branded Search Volume
When AI answers name a brand, some readers go and search for it directly. Track branded queries in Google Search Console alongside direct traffic and look for rises that paid activity cannot explain. The same Ahrefs study found branded search volume correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.392, which suggests the two move together.
5. AI Referral Traffic and Conversions
Some AI answers do produce clicks. Visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini usually appear as referrals in Google Analytics 4, where a custom channel group can collect them. Track leads and sales against that channel, since these visitors arrive with their question already answered.
What Earns AI Citations?
Researchers at Princeton University and partner institutions presented a GEO study at KDD 2024 showing that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources lifted visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%. Keyword stuffing reduced it. Measure each page by its citation rate as well as its traffic.
Pages with a direct opening answer, clear headings and sourced figures should outperform long narrative pieces that bury the point. Our guide to optimising content for ChatGPT and Gemini citations shows how to restructure them.
Is AI Search Too Volatile to Measure?
AI tools rarely give the same answer twice, which leads some marketers to dismiss GEO tracking as noise. A single answer is noisy. A fixed query set run on a fixed schedule is a sample that reveals trends.
Run your full set monthly and your priority topics weekly. Log the platform, model and date for every run, then judge movement over a quarter rather than a week.
How to Report GEO Performance
Report citation rate and share of voice as leading indicators. Treat branded search and AI referrals as the bridge, with leads and revenue as the outcome. That chain lets a board see how visibility in AI answers turns into commercial results.

Frequently Asked Questions
What tools can I use to measure GEO performance?
Profound, Otterly.ai and BrightEdge all offer AI visibility tracking. Manual query testing across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot remains a low-cost way to audit citation rate. Most teams get the clearest picture from a specialist platform plus monthly manual spot checks.
How is GEO measurement different from SEO measurement?
SEO measurement relies on ranking position, organic sessions and click-through rate. GEO measurement tracks whether AI answers name your brand, how often they name you against competitors and whether that visibility lifts branded search and AI referrals. Run both side by side, since each covers a part of the journey the other misses.
How long does GEO take to show results?
No reliable public benchmark exists yet. Timescales vary by category and competition. In our view, restructured pages show citation movement first, while share of voice builds over months of consistent content and earned coverage.
